What SortMyFile is
SortMyFile is a free utility hub for PDF, image, OCR, and accessibility work. Core tools run in your browser on your device. That is the privacy model: for those tools, your files are not uploaded to a SortMyFile server to be processed — the work happens locally in the tab you already have open.
Why it exists
SortMyFile is built by a solo indie builder. It exists so anyone can run PDF, image, OCR, and accessibility utilities free, in the browser, without uploading files or signing up. The founder was frustrated with sites that interrupt urgent work with sign-in walls, extra steps, and features locked behind a paywall. That friction kills urgency; it is a blocker. That experience is what led to building this site — tools that open, run, and finish without asking for an account first.
How privacy works here (honestly)
For core tools, processing stays client-side. Common libraries include pdf-lib and pdf.js for PDF work, tesseract.js for on-device OCR, and jSquash for image compression and conversion. Your file bytes for those flows are handled in the browser; SortMyFile does not need them on a server to merge, compress, OCR, or check contrast.
If account or Pro features ship later, those paths may talk to a server for login or billing — not for uploading your PDFs to run the free utilities themselves. Features that truly need a server (for example high-fidelity office conversion or URL crawlers) are kept off the free $0 hosting path and listed as coming later where they apply, so the site can stay free to run without pretending every format conversion is local.
